Our Impact

Our environmental, social and governance overview.

Introduction

Global demand for products and services that create unforgettable moments continues to grow.

As an ethical, responsible, innovative company, we are pleased to be the lead player in meeting this demand.

Our ESG strategy is centred around three main pillars: our products, our environment and our people. It was developed alongside United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, and whilst all 17 goals are extremely important to us, we have set five priority goals which are at the forefront of our strategy and for which clear targets have been set.

Our strategy and track-record is setting new sustainability standards for our industry. We continue to adopt a leadership stance and continually strive to improve our products and processes.

Environmental Impact

Whilst our products help many people worldwide create unforgettable moments, we want them to do so with a minimal impact on the environment. We are taking the lead in implementing a broad  series of measures to reduce the footprint of our products and packaging.

We are proud to say that our businesses in Asia, Europe, the UK, Malaysia and Australia are now FSC® certified. Our factory in Malaysia has obtained FSC® certification for latex and we are currently developing an FSC certified latex balloon range.

Key product categories such as cutlery, cups, plates, and balloon sticks have been transitioned to paper and wood.

A new range of sustainable costumes was introduced for Halloween 2020 and has since been expanded to include World Book Day and licensed costumes. The costumes are manufactured from 100% recycled polyester (exclusive of the trims), are fully machine washable and packed in recyclable cardboard which includes a fun children's activity.

We've also reduced waste resulting from sampling in the development stage by 25% and we are piloting 3D design software.

Paper packaging is being used increasingly for our products. We are trialling additional alternatives such as reusable mesh bags. All unnecessary packaging has been removed we are introducing a recyclable mono-plastic bag with 40% recycled content for our costumes.

Our strategy for the future is even more ambitious. Within the next 12 months we aim to ensure that 10% of our decorative ranges are reusable, that none of our products contain non-replaceable batteries and we aim to introduce 35% recycled content on all plastic packaging.

The long-term goals include increasing the amount of recycled plastic content to 50% and ensuring that 25% of all paper decorative products are made of recycled content and are fully recyclable.

Our Group carbon emissions are calculated and reported in line with the greenhouse gas (GHG) protocol. Together with Climate Partner, we work towards reducing these emissions by setting realistic targets and participating in meaningful offset projects in countries where we manufacture our products as part of our efforts to give back to the local communities.

Wonder and its Group of companies commits to reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 25% by 2026 and 50% by 2031 using a 2021 base-year. To reduce Scope 3 emissions, the Group commits to have the top 50% of suppliers in terms of total purchase value set their own GHG reduction targets by 2025.

Additionally, we aim to reduce emissions resulting from business travel and employee commuting 40% and emissions resulting from waste generated in operations 25% by 2025. These targets will be submitted for verification with the Science Based Targets Initiative, which adds independent technical expertise, and we aim to be Net Zero at between 2045 and 2050, aligning with the 1,5° case scenario. We also manage our suppliers, ensuring they have an environmental management system in place and we encourage all to join the ZDHC program and all production factories to register with the Higg Index.

Social Impact

Our priority Sustainable Development Goals 1, 8 and 10 underpin our global commitment to ending poverty, providing decent work, supporting economic growth and reducing inequality.

The evidence of our work is tangible at our factory in Madagascar, which is one of the largest local employers and a vital source of income for many people. We provide full employment, decent work with equal pay and support the local economy. We also engage in social projects, having recently engaged in projects in Tana and Antsirabe. We donate costumes for children at Christmas and Carnival through local associations.

We work hard to ensure our global supplier chain shares our ESG commitments. Our efforts are not only centred around fighting poverty and hunger, but also discrimination and gender inequality. All suppliers are provided with vendor manuals, must provide us with full visibility of their supply chain and sign our Ethical Code of Conduct and Anti-Bribery Policy.

Crucially they are also subjected to regular internal or third-party audits to ensure they comply with all requirements. We are members of Amfori BSCI and Sedex through our businesses in Germany and the UK.

Diversity and inclusion

With 1 in 5 people having experienced discrimination in their life and women accounting for only 39% of total employment in 2019, we are fully aware of the prevalence these issues have.

With a multicultural team coming from many different backgrounds, mutual respect and understanding is of highest importance for our business.

We offer all employees a safe and inclusive work environment, free of discrimination, with access to healthcare, further training and education and career development.

We promote diversity and equal opportunity, women in leadership and equal remuneration for women and men.

In 2021, female representation at leadership level increased to 30%.
